According to the plan, the ship was to drift, in the ice, on the ocean current from the coast of Siberia across the North Pole to Greenland. The goal, to get to the North Pole, was not reached, but the scientific profit was of great importance to arctic research.

Nach den Plänen sollte das Schiff im Eis mit den Meeresströmungen von der sibirischen Küste über den Nordpol nach Grönland treiben. Das Ziel, an den Nordpol zu kommen, wurde nicht erreicht, aber die wissenschaftlichen Resultate waren von grosser Bedeutung für die Polarforschung.
