Življenje
Sally je srednji od treh otrok očeta Kierana Rooneya, delavca pri Telecom Éireann in matere Marie Farrell, lastnice umetniške galerije.Cocozza, Paula (24. maj 2017). »'I have an aversion to failure': Sally Rooney feels the buzz of her debut novel'«. Pridobljeno 14. maja 2020.</ref>l-people|url-status=live|access-date=2021-08-29|website=The Guardian|language=en}}</ref>[2] Študirala je angleščino na Trinity Collegu (TCD).[3] Po diplomi se je na istem collegu vpisala magistrski študij politologije, ki pa ga ni zaključila. Magisterij je nato leta 2013 zaključila na študiju ameriške literature.[4] Sama se ima za marksistko.[5]
Že na Trinity Collegu je sodelovala v debatnih skupinah, leta 2013 pa je na evropskem univerzitetnem debatnem prvenstvu osvojila prvo mesto.[6][7] O tej izkušnji je pisala v svojem eseju Even if you beat me.[8] Preden je postala poklicna pisateljica je delala v administraciji restavracije v Dublinu.[9][10] Trenutno živi v mestu Castlebar in je poročena z učiteljem matematike, Johnom Prasifko.[4][11]

The author of Normal People is a self-professed Marxist... her politics seeps through her writing. It's no accident the central protagonists of the book that has captured the nation's imagination are the rich girl living in the mansion and the poor boy whose mother works as her family's cleaner. The TV version glosses over the discussions around 'The Communist Manifesto' and the feminist bible 'The Golden Notebook'.
