However, I think that VisualEditor should be programmed to give sensible wiki syntax, not elaborate HTML workarounds for layout that wasn't even intended. If wiki syntax offers linking only the root of a word to display the whole word linked, then that's probably what the average user will want to achieve by highlighting the root and making it linked.
