Voynomir the Slav, Vojnomir the Slav or Wonomyrus Sclavus was a man of slavic origin who had a high position in frankish head-quater during their war aganinst Avars in the year 795. His origin and social position are not mentioned in any contemporary medieval source. He is claimed to be the duke of slavic Istra by some authors, duke of Panonian Slavs (in what is known as northern Croatia in the present) by croat authors, while slovenian authors view him as a duke of Carniola or duke of some local Carantanian duchery. Chronicle of the Priest of Dioclea mentioned one slavonian duke Vojnomir at the time of Voynomir the Slav, but this book from 12th century does not mentioned their sources and the passage about Vojnomir can easely be a romanticised interpolation.

Anyway- it is hard to beleive, that a leader of the foreign land could be accepted as military leader by the Franks. Voynomir the Slav was probably only an exceptional slavic individual, who made his career in frankish army and there is also a possibility that he lived in Friuli.
