- there is a Free Shot rule for anyone who is that good. If the same coloured ball is volunteered from "off the spot" three times consecutively, then after that third pot that coloured ball is NOT re-spotted until after the next shot is played. A free ball is declared by the referee allowing & forcing the player to play any another ball, BUT should that other ball be a colour ball and not a red ball, it is referred to as a "free shot ball".

There is no penalty for not potting a free shot ball, thus the name "free shot". A "free shot ball" is different from a "free ball" - the free shot ball can be used to form a snooker.

- "off (moving off from) the spot" i.e. "from on the spot". If a player pots a red, then a blue which is on the spot, this first blue is a "regular blue" not a volunteer blue - so he would need to continue and pot three more blues "off the spot" (i.e. spotted blues) to earn a free shot.

- volunteering is not mandatory, you can play regular snooker as a strategy to rid all the red balls, especially if the opposition have not yet potted the first and essential red which means they are as yet handicapped and unable to "volunteer" colour balls.
